Scholarship on Namibia and southern Africa is becoming more abundant year-by-year, with increasingly-large percentages being funded by and conducted at overseas institutions. Many of these universities and research institutes (especially in Europe) have encouraged their researchers to publish their work Open Access, even helping to fund the process.
This trend is a good step towards democratising knowledge and removing over-priced paywalls which inhibit researchers in the Global South from accessing articles and books. At the same time, however, it limits access to those willing to strain their eyes looking at a computer screen for three hundred pages.
Mukorob is a new publishing imprint which seeks to make international research available to readers in Namibia and southern Africa. We support authors in negotiating publishing permissions, as well as designing books attractive to local audiences. We work within existing peer review mechanisms, as well as developing our own, ensuring that the research which is made available is quality and accurate. Most importantly, we ensure that Mukorob’s books are affordable to the average reader.
—————-
Sometimes called ‘Vingerklip’ or the ‘Finger of God’, Mukorob stood for millennia in southern Namibia, before collapsing in December 1988. We have chosen Mukorob as our name and symbolism to reflect the transformative nature of Namibia’s history, society, and culture. Even that which has stood as long as Mukorob may one day change into something new. Making critical research available allows for this change to be directed towards a just future.

This book explores the history, ecology, and society of a seemingly inhospitable stretch of land along the Orange River in southern Namibia. Here, a group of African farmers have succeeded against all odds to stay on their ancestral homeland through decades of colonialism and apartheid. The twenty-first century, however, has brought different people looking to evict them: nature conservationists. These farmers face off against billionaire gemstone mine owners, rhinoceros veterinarians and carbon finance executives, seeking to prove their legal and moral claims to their ancestral lands. This book reveals how we got here and what is at stake if they fail.
Mukorob is a brand new publishing house. For these reasons, we are currently working with authors who have recently (or intend to soon) publish books on Namibia with publishing firms which have no distribution in the Republic of Namibia. We work with these authors to negotiate with their publishers to have their books co-published in Namibia with Mukorob. We are keen to speak with authors who are interested in making their books available and affordable to Namibian audiences.
We are primarily interested in works which broadly fit into the social sciences and the humanities, including but not limited to the following fields: history, anthropology, political economy, sociology, urban & rural studies, visual arts & culture, heritage studies, geography, and archival science. We are particularly keen to work with authors who adopt a critical perspective on their discipline.
It is out intention to begin soliciting original publications from Namibian and non-Namibian authors during 2027.
